Question 6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your product?
From the start of making my magazine to getting the finished product I feel like I have learnt a lot of new ways to handle different technologies that are involved in making my magazine. One resource I have used a lot during the making of my magazine was a camera, obviously in the past I have had experience with using a camera but this time I had to take into account so many different things e.g. lighting, props and what the model has to look like to reflect well on the final images. I also learnt when to use a flash and when not too as sometimes it can make the pictures look too edited and this isn't the look I was going for.
Fortunately I had a 10 mega pixel camera to use when doing my pictures so they came out in a very high quality and needed barely any photoshopping.
With regard to any editing that did need doing I used Photoshop, to cut and crop the images to suit my magazine and to slightly enhance some of them. I used photoshop briefly last year in ICT but not in as much depth as I have done in this course, many of the features were brand new to me and I had to get to grips with them fast in order to finish my magazine. I loved that you can change the image completely to suit your needs or just simply crop it and its not too complex.
Another thing I also learnt a lot about was the online programmes I had to use like Blogger and Slideshare because I had never used these before. Once I got into the two programmes and familiarised myself with what it had to offer I found it very easy to get around it and I will no doubt use these in the future for other media projects I have. I found Slideshare very useful and surprisingly simple to use but yet I thought it was an effective way of broadcasting all the different aspects of my magazine from the start and throughout.

Question 5
How did you attract/address your audience?
I included a number of different things to incorporate into my magazine to address/attract the audience. I had to bear in mind what my audience would find attractive so then they would buy it.
Below is a link to my Slideshare account where I will be answering how my magazine did attract the target audience.

Question 4
Who would be the audience for your media product?
I have chosen that my target audience is young teenage girls with the age range of 13-18, this is a fairly large range and is suitable for the type of magazine I have. The pricing of the magazine I have kept to a minimum because I know that young girls cannot afford a magazine thats £3/4 so its suited to my target audience perfectly.
Another thing is the my target audience is what music they like obviously, this magazine does not cater for the audience that likes rock/hip hop/country music because my magazine is for pop lovers. The reality is that this may be a girly magazine but they have to like the kind of music to really be interested in the magazine.
When I first started thinking of the genre of my magazine I created a mood board that consisted of different artists/bands that are suitable for my target audience and worked off that. A couple of the artists I suggested were, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Miley Cyrus and bands like The Wanted, 5SOS and The Vamps. These artists fit well in to my magazine so I had to choose the right model that is similar to these. I am someone who would read these kinds of magazine so in turn I am my own target audience, I used myself a lot when creating the magazine as I obviously knew what my target audience would want from my magazine.
When making my magazine I also looked into the type of clothes my target audience would wear and the types of shops they would shop at. A couple of brands I initially thought of were the likes of Topshop, Miss Selfridge and River Island, all high street, affordable shops that are also really girly and suit my target audiences dress sense. Another reason I thought of these shops was because I have seen the people from my this particular social group in there a lot and they are common brands that they were.
When it comes to TV shows I found it difficult to think of because there is so many and everybody watches different programmes but some that I thought of were Waterloo Road, Hollyoaks, Gok Wan's fashion as these all contain the type of people that are potentially my target audience.
I wanted to reflect the style that my target audience dresses like in my images, my model wears girly, pink, flowery clothes that represent the people that would buy my magazine. The body language of the model is cool and relaxed and I believe this is the type of person that would read my magazine.
I think my target audience would want to buy my magazine because I use all the right people that entices them in and all the conventions that would attract them. When talking about images I used all the right clothing to link to their style. The price which is £2 which I think is very competitive, it is cheaper than other similar magazines out there and should attract the audience because I know that young people don't always have a lot of money to fork out for a magazine so this is why I am offering my magazine for £2.
Profile of my target audience:
Name: Kayleigh Allen
Age: 17
Favourite artists: The Wanted, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, The Vamps, 5SOS
Hobbies: Dancing, Swimming, Singing

Question 3
What kind of media institution would distribute your media product and why?
I had to get the right distributor for my magazine to make sure the magazines reaches the right public, as well as presenting a positive image. The first thing I did was make sure the distributor also distributes other magazines similar to mine with a similar target audience so that the magazine gets distributed out to the right audience and also have experience in dealing with the audience I am wanting my magazine to appeal to.
Below is a link to my slideshare where I have evaluated which media group is best to distribute my magazine.

Question 2
How does the media product represent a particular social group?
When creating my magazine I knew I had to pick the right model for the genre of the magazine and the way the model looked/dressed played a huge role in this. The model's pink, flowery, girly fashion sense was associated with the pop/girly artists that my magazine contains so she went perfectly also the poses she did had to be right otherwise it wouldn't represent the intended social group as well. The way the model looks is a representation of the social group that would buy my magazine, young, fun, pop loving teenage girls.
On the double page spread, the picture is of the model sitting down, she is clearly very relaxed and thats what I wanted to portray throughout the whole interview. I asked relaxed, fun questions that I believe my target audience would want to hear about. I found similar conventions in other magazines when doing my research in 'Top of the pops' and 'Smash Hits'. An example of this was a double page spread from 'Billboard' magazine with Lady GaGa, the picture displays her 'strange' and 'different' fashion sense well and we can that throughout the questions too.
The photo on the front cover is also relaxed and is wearing a pink skirt and white top with blonde curly hair, this is exactly what I expect my target audience to look up to. The picture isn't overly done and most of the images are close ups and mid-shots to show clearly who the person is and to make it feel more personal which also entices the audience.
Not only do the images represent my chosen social group but also the colours I have used and the other artists I have put into my magazine e.g. Miley Cyrus, The Wanted etc. The colours I used were all pastel colours like pinks, blues and some greys that I think made my magazine more appealing to the audience.

Question 1
What way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Title of the magazine
The title of my magazine is 'Teen Pop Obsession', I chose this as it will automatically appeal to my audience, who are young 'teenagers' who have an obsession with pop music, I believe this will catch my target audiences' eye and they will want to buy it. I chose 'Top of the pops' and 'Smash Hits' as my style models for my own magazine as I felt they have a similar vibe to what I wanted my magazine to have. They also have longer titles that consist of more than one word unlike 'Q' or 'NME' that are a lot smaller but still impact. The colours I have used will appeal to my target audience which are young teenage girls so stereotypically these will like pinks and blue and neutral pastel colours.
People
It was vital for me to find the right person for my magazine and that would represent my magazine well. This top of the pops magazine that features One Direction is a perfect style model for me as this band suits this edition perfectly as it says "BIGGEST+BEST pop mag' and they use the biggest and best boy band around right now like the magazine. This is when I realised that the cover stars personalities had to portray through the images.
Cover star
For my cover star I had to chose the right person that would reflect the genre of my magazine well, so they had to look the part as this was vital for me. I believe the model I used was perfect for my magazine because she fitted into the role of a teenager that loved pop music and girly things well. My model had blonde long hair which is the view on a typical girly teenager as well as girly clothes like skirts/dresses with bright colours. Although she was portraying the view of an innocent girly girl she still had some attitude to show that she was still a teenager.
I believe images are the most important aspect of magazines so getting them right was crucial. My first go of taking the pictures didn't go well as when I went to put them on my magazine they were blurry so had to be re-shot again later on, I think I could of used the pictures if I wanted too because they weren't that bad but I think getting the right images was the best thing for my magazine. The poses the model did represented the look I was going for and I am very happy with them.
This copy of 'Billboard' magazine has Justin Bieber as their main star and I believe this image represents the publics view on Justin very well, he is seen as a cute, teen heartthrob that girls adore and here he is looking innocent but still some attitude for a big magazine like 'Billboard'.
The magazine has stayed true to Justin's image and haven't tried to turn him into something he isn't, which is what I have tried to do with my cover star.
Font and Style
The main thing I wanted for my font was to make it readable and presentable but also to look good as well. For the masthead I chose to have 'Teen Pop' in a bigger more clearer font as this the magazine being called this I felt that 'Pop' in bigger writing illustrates an actual pop of something. When I first started thinking about the masthead I had all the masthead in the same font and style but later on chose to change it to make it stand out more. The rest of the magazine is in fonts Arial Narrow or Century Gothic as I thought these two fonts were the easiest to read but still went well with the girly theme of my magazine.
Written Content
The writing on my double page spread and throughout the whole magazine had to be a key part to get right because it did take up so much space. I had to use language that my readers would understand.
Also looking at other magazines I saw that their contents page titles were brief and they only had a short sentence underneath to quickly explain the title.
As the cover star is only 16 I wanted to portray that in my interview with her in the double page spread so the questions are relaxed and informal and we talked about what fans want to her, as I am my own target audience in a sense.
Mise-En-Scene of images
Images are a huge part of any magazine and getting them right was crucial as this is what was going to attract my target audience to buy it. My main aim for my photos was to find someone that would act as a type of representative for the magazine and portray the right genre that people are expecting. I believe I chose the perfect person to model for me and the clothes, hair and makeup are all spot on too. The pink skirt look for the double page spread is very girly with her curly hair and natural makeup, she is also holding a microphone and I think without this people could get confused wether its a music magazine or not. On the contents page she is in a different outfit which is a matching flowery two piece which again goes with the genre of the magazine and portrays what I wanted it too. One thing I am happy about for all the images is the lighting, the fact that they didn't have to be edited with photoshop is good because they already looked professional.
The image (below) is the picture from my double page spread, this image is very simple with minimal makeup but still looks very effective. Like the front cover image the lighting is very bright and gives off a happy feel. The models clothes and look illustrates the music type in my magazine well. I kept the background plain here as I didn't feel like it needed distractions from other parts so I wanted it really stripped back.
Layout
The layout of my magazine was very important to me as if I didn't get it right it was have a major impact on the final look of my magazine. One thing I didn't want to happen was make the page look over-crowded and messy because this would hinder how successful the magazine would be.
On my front cover I chose to have the artist on the right hand side of the page and the masthead in the middle as I felt this gave the magazine a different dynamic to other magazine. Here I have found a copy of a professional magazine that has the image in the middle. The artist is directing in the middle of the page and the articles inside are surrounded by him, I found this with a lot of magazines when I did my research and wanted to do something slightly different. Although I changed the place of the picture I wanted to keep all the features of my magazine together so they were clear and visible to the audience.
On the other hand I kept my contents page fairly similar to my style models as I felt this looked best and simple works best. Looking at my style models I found that the subheadings tend to be in bold writing to stand out more navigate the readers to the right page quickly, this is what i've done to the artists names to draw the audience in. There are a lot of conventions that needed to go into my contents page so a key thing for me was to make sure like front cover it didn't get too cramped up and it was still clear to read. I chose to only use one image on my contents page because it already has a lot of writing on it so I felt that if I added more images the page would look too busy and the audience would zone out. In terms of the layout of the articles I kept these to the left hand side because we read from left to right and it flowed so much better.
Another convention I saw on different magazines was an editorial but not all of my style models had this and I felt that my contents page already gave the audience enough information so it didn't need an editorial, it would of taken up more space that really I didn't have and would make it look cramped.
For the double page spread I changed this a lot throughout the duration of making my magazine because I wanted to make it look as spacious as can be. One thing that I kept all the way through was the large 'T' in grey in the background which obviously stands for 'Tayla', it was something I saw in a magazine with Lady GaGa and it stood out a lot for me so I decided to put into my magazine too. It's something a little bit different than usual magazines and it just adds something nice onto the background instead of just white all the time. My double page spread has been clearly sectioned into three different parts, the heading, the interview and the image, this makes the page look spacious.

Magazine research
I have chosen to put a large 'T' behind the writing of my double page spread as it is the main cover stars name 'Tayla Wilde'. I got this idea from Q's magazine double page spread for Lady GaGa.
Change of double page spread
I have changed some of the replies for the questions on the double page spread to make them a little bit longer and more in depth as when I looked over them they seemed a bit short and blunt.

New pictures
Because of the blurriness of the last pictures I took I haven't been able to put them onto my
magazine so I have left this till last to re-do them.
I have decided to do these later this week with the same person as before, as soon as these are done I will put them onto all three pages of my magazine and it will be done.

I believe my double page is nearly done. I have finished all the questions i'm asking my
cover star and any little adjustments. The only thing I need to add now is a picture that is
being shot later this week.

Audience Feedback
Front cover-
One comment made on my front cover by someone from a social media website was that the title 'teen obsession' doesn't relate much to a music magazine, but I have changed this to 'teen pop obsession' on the contents page.
Also the picture on the front cover is slightly blurry and you can't see the girl as clearly as you could if we did it again.
One person commented that they liked the gradient background (blue and pink) because it makes the writing stand out!
Another thing people liked about the front cover were the 'Mary Kate' in larger writing so we know who it is on front cover and the main star.
Contents page-
A comment on the contents page said 'the drastic changes made to the contents page really make the magazine look more professional' , the large pink bubble writing that says 'contents' stands out and we can clearly see what the page is. The writing about what's in the magazine isn't brief and there is enough information.
The picture on the contents page is good but could be better because if the blurriness of that one aswell.
Double page spread-
There isn't a lot to comment on the double page because there isn't much there at the moment but one of the comments said that they liked the large quote with speech marks at the side because it makes the reader want to read the article.
They liked the fact the questions that were in pink writing was different to the actual answers which were black, the contrast between them both are good!
One comment made on my front cover by someone from a social media website was that the title 'teen obsession' doesn't relate much to a music magazine, but I have changed this to 'teen pop obsession' on the contents page.

These are an example of some of the photographs I took that came out blurry meaning that these might need doing again.
